For months Melissa and I have been wondering when all these conservative Republicans who have been supporting our former mayor for president would wake up and realize that he is an insane liberal. That is -- he is independently insane AND liberal. The man is pro-choice, pro-gay, pro-gun control, and pro-public transportation. He might be lying about his positions now. But the record is clear. He is also plainly insane. He had lost his mind by the last few months in office and everyone in NYC was sick of his paranoid and imperial style.

There is more, of course. Rudy was actually one of the big problems on 9/11. So we can't understand why the rest of the country thinks he is some kind of hero. The reason so many firefighters died that day is that he refused to standardize and upgrade their communication equipment and he insisted that the city emergency command post lie at -- you guessed it -- the World Trade Center. Every security and emergency expert in the city said it should be in Brooklyn. Rudy did not want to be filmed walking away across the bridge from a disaster to the command post. So he overruled the experts. It's no wonder NYC firefighters hate the guy.

So it turns out that Rudy knows a little bit about turning and running. New York Magazine reports that while John Kerry, Al Gore, and John Murtha were bravely serving their country in Vietnam, Rudy was dodging the draft with the skill and elan of a young Newt Gingrich, Dick Cheney, or George W. Bush!

So maybe he was destined to be a chickenhawk Republican after all!
