The Rise of Wikipedia in Google Web Searches

Have you noticed over the past two months that Wikipedia entries related to search terms have been moving up to the top of Google Web Search results? Maybe I missed some discussion of this. I think it's pretty fascinating. Generally, page rank is pretty stable on Google. It usually takes some sort of intraGoogle tweak. But perhaps this happened because of the general trust and appreciation of Wikipedia.

Does anyone know?

Check out these search results:

For months I have been giving talks about Google in which I point out how strange life is when viewed through the Google lense. For instance, until recently, if you searched for my first name, this blog would come up first or second -- far above any mention of the Hindu god after whom I am named.

Think about it: A god sacred to a billion people vs. this humble blog. What's really important?

Anyway, I am happy to report the ascendency of the Hindu god, thanks to Wikipedia.

Congratulations, Siva.

Dude, I thought you were a god.

According to that guy I met in Seattle last month you ARE a God...a Copyright God.

You were also in my pantheon!

On a side note, have you read the following?

Maybe it's part of the explanation (although Wikipedia's own growth should be responsible as well).
