Defending Ann Coulter
Anyone else think the hunt for plagiarism in Coulter's oeuvre was silly and counterproductive?
Don't we have anough reasons to dismiss her without resorting to unsubstantiated (and insubstantial) cheap shots?

Well, I haven't seen the latest slew of complaints, but this was basically my response when this first came up a year ago.

Someday, if I am feeling masochistic enough, I will do along post about the amount of time and energy certain Supposedly Liberal Dudes spend on people like Coulter, or even more surprisingly, on conservative bloggers who are read primarily by the hardcore groupies who agree with them, don't write books or newspaper columns or appear on television, and therefore have almost no real national visibility or influence. Obviously the Supposedly Liberal Dudes are free to spend their time as they like, but the choices they make are both fascinating and alarming, I think. Some of them are just hatemongers, plain and simple. They may support abortion rights, or oppose the Iraq War, and otherwise be on the liberal side of political issues, but mostly they seem invested in making fun of people in the nastiest ways possible. I think the whole Coulter plagiarism thing was just another manifestation of this.
