This is What a Mandate Looks Like

Anyone who lives in the NJ-NY-Philadelphia region or who saw Marshall Curry's outstanding, Oscar-nominated documentary "Street Fight," most likely knows of Cory Booker. Booker challenged four term incumbent Mayor of Newark, Sharpe James, in 2002. Booker ran again this year (although James did not) and won, marking a change in leadership for the first time in twenty years. Booker was criticized for many things during both races--not being black enough, being too educated, being an outsider--but he took yesterday's election in the widest margin of victory in the city's history. The voters appear to have also given him a majority of the City Council seats so he might have a chance at making some of the changes that this city so desperately needs. And that, folks, is a mandate.
