Humorless Feminism

If only I could be one of those cool feminists with a sense of humor. Unfortunately, “Ann seems to have a problem with humor and snark.” (quote from link-associated comments thread). Let me illustrate why:

TBogg has great "liberal blog" credentials, as he is a past Koufax winner and 2006 nominee for best blog, yet TBogg also provides a platform for exposing the dour barrenness of my sad, un-snark-appreciating existence. He actually has made me laugh on many occasions, because when he is not being sexist or otherwise offensive I do actually find him extremely funny, or would I guess if, you know, I actually had a sense of humor. I just don’t understand why when he is making fun of someone whose words or ideas are completely stupid he has to leverage her womanhood, as if that is somehow significantly related. Below are a few examples. This is by no means exhaustive, there are far too many for that to be easily accomplishable. I couldn’t help noticing that one quick and easy way to find his posts about women is just look for words like “slut” and “bitch,” so feel free to further entertain yourself at his blog by doing so. Obviously such name calling fails to pleasantly amuse me because I am biliously humor impaired, but if you find this kind of thing funny, you might especially enjoy these somewhat randomly extracted side-splitting examples:

1. There is this post, which starts out, “Crazy-assed bitch Michelle Malkin…” then describes Charmaine Yost as “a pair of sensible shoes in a world full of fuck me pumps,” and then calls Yost a “fat drunken cow.”

2. There is this post which asks: “Why does Michelle Malkin hate her children and not want to spend time with them?”
Here is some of the sparkling repartee in the comments that follow:

“What a cunt”

“I really wish you would stop posting that picture because, like Wile E. Coyote, I fall for it every time and my internal dialogue goes something like "Ah, pretty girl...wonder if she's wearing a bra...her hair is nice and glossahhh, FUCK!! It's Malkin!!"”

“For some reason every time I see her the phrase "suckie, fuckie one buckie" comes to mind.” (NB: In fairness, the guy who made the second comment expressed discomfort with the third comment. But as of this writing, TBogg hadn’t.)

3. At this post, among other insults he refers to Ann Althouse as a “humorless bint.” Bint “is British slang for a woman or girl, but it is always disparaging and offensive and signals the user as lower class and unrefined.”

4. Here he refers to a right wing blog written by a women as “Shrug My Tits.”

5. Here he links with great apparent (but not to me) hilarity to a site which asserts that “Malkin” was a Shakespearean term for “kitchen slut.”

6. This post, entitled ”Kathryn Jean Lopez: Right Wing Slut” has a side-splitting reference to “Barbara Comstock, a woman so sleazy that Tom DeLay wouldn't touch her with Jack Abramoff's dick…” Lopez, TBogg informs us, “[so] moistens at the mere mention of Mitt we expected to read a love poem and an offer to be wife number six...but instead we find the little hussy has a virtual harem of men that she would like to play human-wheelbarrow with.”

7. Here we learn that unattractive women know nothing about sex, as illustrated with their photos and articulated through “Tbogg's Law” which holds “Some people choose abstinence. Others have it chosen for them.”

8. This post entitled “Masturbators, Mexicans, and Sluts. Oh My!” is about “Debbie Schlussel (blond, crazy, repository of America's collagen reserves...that Debbie Schlussel).”

Then there are TBogg's more, um, sophisticated sexist gags, like this:

9."We've established what you are. Now we're just haggling price"
"A screen-grab from WorldNetDaily:
offer.jpg
"Oh. It's just books. Put away your roll of quarters...."

Or this:

10. "This is not for you, dear."
"Like a mom who has traded in her 'mom pants' for a pair of low-rise, someone needs to tell Danielle Crittenden that the IM parody format is as dead as her husbands presidential speech writing career and she looks kind of...silly.

"Please stop. You're embarassing the kids."

Or this one:

11. This comedic gem features a photo of conservative women, and somehow the humor of the situation partly evolves from the fact that she is ugly and therefore no one would want to have sex with her, and in fact despite the fact that he is heterosexual, he would prefer having sex with an attractive man if he had to choose one of them.

Finally, if only I could see “the funny” in domestic violence, this would probably have me rolling on the floor:

12. “…I can no longer in good conscience call Michele Malkin, America's Crazy-Assed Bitch™.

"Jean Schmidt reminds of the mom of my friend John when I was growing up and how none of us would ever go to his house because we knew she was nuts and we didn't want to possibly have to talk to her so we would wait out in the street. Her name was Mrs. Swingle and she used to harangue her husband and kids unmercifully. When I was in my twenties my mom called me and said that Mr. Swingle had been arrested for killing her. He was this meek little guy who just wanted to sit in his chair and read Cahiers du cinéma magazine and drink coffee and one day he had enough of her shit and he went into the garage and got an axe and came back in whacked her in the head with it from behind while she was watching TV. The he called the police.

"True story.”

Oh well, maybe someday with enough helpful guidance I'll evolve into the kind of feminist who finds "humor" like this absolutely uproarious. But I doubt it.

Comments

Hmmm. I'm definitely jumping into the middle w/o knowing what's going on here (I've never read TBogg), but I'd say those comments aren't funny and definitely prove that you can be both liberal and sexist simultaneously.

I went over and read TBogg thanks to your post - what a bunch of assholes over there!

Ain't never going back. Don't see the point. Too many other blogs out there.

Yet this is an award winning "liberal blog."

You are right...it is not funny. And, your conversations about feminism are so needed and appreciated exactly because there is so much to counter in this culture.

It is ubiquitous (much like the Kinkaid paintings which lose impact for being repeated formula [and way too sweet instead of beautiful]. Now I imagine Hansel and Gretel turning into that road).

Adding to the culture's training for example, junior high and high school coaches sure turn a guy's head when calling him a "girl" for his performance or the group "Ladies." Where applicable, I have said, "You throw like a kid or an unpracticed person."

It must be part of that conservative, authoritarian tendency to dominate socially, into which too many can occasionally or routinely lapse. It can be inate among some and can be taught through repetition among some. That is why countering it is such a good idea.

For some years now, everytime someone says the "B" word I come back with the other "B" word saying, "You mean, Bastard" or "Bastardly." Equal time feels correct.

Also, in trying to think of a new, apt and powerful curse to say to describe Bush's awful, greater-extinction-level-producing job performance as regards global warming (Bush may yet take us all down with him, if he has pushed us past the tipping point, and without our successfully having stopped him...sheep...Whitney...sheep...) I have thought of:

FFer!

Yep,

not MFer nor MoFo

but FFer or FaFo!

Though EarthFer would be more apt.

But, maybe some apt, since we are already in the 5th biggest extinction event without another day passing...this would make Bush and his GOP party the party of anti-life...the party of our extinction...the party of the death of us all, if we don't problem solve and turn it around.

I tend to deplore put-downs of conservative assholes (of either gender) on the basis of appearance wherever I see them (what's the difference between calling Rush Limbaugh "a big fat idiot" and calling Michael Moore fat?), but in Coulter's case I can't help but wonder if it's justified, as she's well known for put-downs of others (especially liberal women) based on their physical appearance.

Many Blue, Yellow and Green Dogs - thanks for your comments and support. I'm glad you understand that name-calling and sexist "humor" is symptomatic of a deeper misogyny.

Elayne - I know what you mean, but part of being leftist for me is being, or at least trying to be, better people than the right wingers. Of course, striving to be a better person than Anne Coulter isn't exactly a challenge!

you rock. this guy seems like the typical "liberal" male jackass who thinks he is down and being all witty and ironic, when he could never truly identify with the experience of being a woman and having these ideas thrown at us unironically on a daily basis. i'd have no patience for a white "ally" to people of color that goes around using racial slurs or insults on conservatives of color, and i have no patience for this bullshit either. as for the person who says what's the difference between calling rush limbaugh a big fat etc. and commenting on the apperance of conservative women, there IS a difference because women in this society are commonly evaluated by their appearance and sex appeal above all else, and their ideas demerited accordingly. debunking the beauty ideal and the sexist "humor" around women being represented as one-dimensional is part and parcel of feminism.

Hey Leena! Welcome back! Thanks for the support - hope all is well with you.

TBogg used to be very funny, but I stopped reading him, like, two years ago when I just didn't get it anymore. Not that I'm a saint or anything (or even win blogging awards), but I just never got the humor in the weird personal attacks. The good Lord knows there's certainly enough in Coulter, Malkin, etc.'s ideas to attack without creeping out the cool chicks like me. Oh well, it's not like there aren't 900 boogoozillion other lefty blogs to read out there.

Hi Ginger! You are a very cool chick indeed. Some one like TBogg can drive a person to conclude either that liberals are full of shit, or that he isn't actually a liberal, he just plays one, badly at times, on his blog. There are a lot of lefty blogs out there, but a few too many TBogg wannabes for my humorless feminist tastes...
