Standing up to Public Sexual Harassment: The Blank Noise Project
Women walking in public in India face an almost constant barrage of nasty comments and worse. Men grab breasts, buttocks, and arms. They get in the way. They comment on physical attributes and styles of dress (especially if a woman wears pants).
The BLANK NOISE PROJECT is a movement among women in India to stand up to this behavior. Please check out the site to get a sense of what is going on and what these women are doing about it.
Blank- that which is not allowed meaning, form or articulation. Noise- that which heightens, builds itself. Eve Teasing as the name suggests,is considered a joke, a prank. Eve Teasing is street sexual harassment. The project seeks to recognize eve teasing as a sexual crime and establish the issue as something that may be normal, but is unacceptable. The Blank Noise project works both online and on the streets of Bangalore, Mumbai , Delhi. We invite you to come along!
Who we are, where we go, what we wear, how we sit, stand, talk, walk in our very own cities. When we demand the need to make our cities non threatening , I don’t expect anyone to think of me as their sister or mother, but to really look at women as citizens who have every right to be out on the streets, without any explanation. Sometimes we just love to walk, stand around, hang around, without looking ‘avaliable.’
