Jon Stewart on Movie Piracy

From this video clip of his intro to the Academy Awards:

Lets face facts. It hasn't been the best year for Hollywood.

The box office was was a little bit down and piracy continues to be a problem. if there is anyone out there involved in illegal movie piracy, don't do it.

Take a good look at these people. these are the people you are stealing from.

Look at them! Face what you have done!
There are women here who can barely afford enough gown to cover their breasts.

I don't have a TV but caught a few epsiodes of The Daily Show when visiting friends in Canada last summer. Funny stuff.

Regarding "piracy": I once did a unit on the creative commons (referred to Copyrights and Copywrongs in that unit!) with a high school social technology class and we started out with an "essential" question -

"Is it ethical to distribute unauthorized copies of copyrighted works to others?"

It was quite a ride. But now I'm convinced that the following is a better question to address -

"Is it ethical to prevent human beings from sharing scientific information or culture?"

My reasoning is here -

If anyone has suggestions for copyright questions that cut straight to the "ethical heart" of copyright, please post them. They should not require a year of university level law school to address either! :)

Peter.

p.s. How do you put hyperlinks or bold or italics etc. in the comments? When I use tags it doesn't display in the preview.

Peter, thanks. I turned off the HTML formatting for comments to limit the effectiveness of comment spam. Spammers were trying to increase Google ranks by pasting hot links into comments.

Sorry about that.

Thanks for posting the link. I hate awards shows and refuse to watch - thanks to this link I didn't have to and still got to see Jon Stewart do his thang.
