How did we lose the war?

So many ways. Lying about the reasons for war, of course. Violating the UN Charter did not help. It kept the number of useful allies in the "coalition" to just one. Torture is key. The United States lost any moral standing early by encouraging torture. I can't think of anything that turned the Arab world (the entire world, for that matter) against us quite so firmly.

But despite all of that, Iraq could have been stabilized (far short of democratized and liberated) if not for the stupidity of the Bush administration's military "minds." The cowardly draft-dodging chickenhawk idiots continue to underestimate the enemy and refuse to send enough troops to do the job.

Instead, much of the country is back in Baath hands (just like much of Afghanistan is back in Taliban hands). And only the Kurd regions are interested in US success. The Shiites are just biding their time until the US leaves so they can go all theocratic on everyone.

How did the most powerful nation in the history of the world let this happen?

Juan Cole explains.
