ERA Petition
"Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex."
"It's simple enough - just twenty-four words, first written by suffragist Alice Paul in 1923. But after 82 years, the Equal Rights Amendment has yet to be ratified and become part of the U.S. Constitution. Thirty-eight states need to ratify the ERA - as of 1982, 35 states had ratified. That means we need only three more states.
"What is so radical about equality under the law for women?
"Let's make 2005 the year of equality! Representative Carol Maloney (D-NY) and Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA) have once again reintroduced the ERA into Congress (H.J. Res. 37 and S.J. Res. 7). Given the time that has elapsed since the 33 supporting states ratified the amendment, we want to let all state legislatures know that we want an equal rights amendment now!"
