Every Once in a While ...
... someone immersed in the copyright debate takes a chance and proposes a new way of doing things that might loosen the deadlock between the Free Culture Movement and the content industries. Software developer Scott Matthews is one of those people who takes chances in this way. Instead of shooting down ideas like this, let's ruminate on them for a while and use them to drive the conversation forward. It's a rather technical proposal, so read the linked post to get an idea of what he wants to do. The virtue of it is that it would help create some sort of usable database of rights and rightsholders (much like Creative Commons does).
I am sorry that Scott chose the ad-hominem-addicted hacks at the Progress and Freedom Foundation to release this plan. But they asked for it by falsely portraying themselves as seeking the "middle ground."
