Why Did Bush Win?
It was not green tea, Theresa Heinz-Kerry, or "moral values." It was Osama Bin Laden, who continues to laugh at us while we continue to support the exact policies that he wishes for.
Osama wanted a religious war. He got one. He wanted Saddam gone. He got it. He wanted chaos and Sunni-Shia suspicion in Iraq. He got it. He wanted the United States bogged down in a losing war. He got it.
Most ominously, he wanted thousands of innocent Americans to die a fiery death and suffer no repurcussions for his actions. He got that, too.
Perversely, Osama's video appearance just before the election only sealed the deal for his best buddy, George W. Bush.
It's not online, but please see Louis Menand's superb yet pithy article in this week's New Yorker on how pollsters analyzed the aftermath of the 2004 elections and how pundits got it all wrong.
It was not gay marriage. It was not abortion. It was 9/11.
Hasn't Osama done enough damage?
