In Appreciation of John Kerry and John Edwards
Today I like and respect John Kerry more than ever before. I continue to disagree with his position on a number of issues, and I don’t endorse everything he said or did during the campaign or during his career, not even close. But he impressed me as decent, and kind, and smart, and very, very hardworking. He would have made a good President, and maybe even a great one. As miserable as I feel about the outcome of this election, I know he feels far worse, and I hope that he gets the appreciation and kudos he deserves for his courage, leadership and generosity of spirit.
Yes, I know that anyone who runs for President has a great deal of hubris, and has made a great many compromises. But when the winning politico-business model is an appeal to fear and greed and racism and homophobia, it takes bravery and integrity to step into the fray and fight so hard, for so long, on what, by and large, was the high road. I profoundly thank and honor John Kerry, and John Edwards too. The country we carry in our hearts will have to wait a little longer.
Now that Bush has even stronger control of Congress and no re-election concerns to moderate his activities, I worry many awful things are on the horizon, the sting of which will not be diminished by righteous “I told you so” choruses. Rest up and take good care.
